Cardinals down Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Plattsburgh State (8-4, 4-1 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (6-6, 2-3) 62-52 on Tuesday evening in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams matched each other in the high scoring first half. It was 18-18 after 10 minutes. Junior forward Barbara Bruno (Bronx, N.Y./Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology) scored nine points for the Bears.
  • The second quarter remained tight, but a 6-0 run made it 31-26 Cardinals at the half. They outscored the Bears 13-8 in the quarter. Freshman guard Amaya Moore (Hudson, N.Y./Hudson) had four points.
  • Potsdam opened the third quarter with an 8-2 run and a Moore layup at 4:18 tied the game at 34. However, Plattsburgh finished with a 13-6 flourish for a 47-40 advantage after 30 minutes. Bruno and senior guard Carley Hill (Essex, Vt./Rice Memorial) each had five points in the third.
  • The Bears were unable to gain ground in the final quarter as Plattsburgh had a 15-12 advantage. Hill and sophomore guard Sara Richards (AuSable Valley, N.Y./AuSable Valley) each hit threes in the fourth.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Potsdam edged Plattsburgh in shooting percentage, 45.7-percent to 45.6.
  • The Cardinals controlled the glass with a 35-27 advantage.
  • Bruno led the Bears with 18 points and three rebounds.
  • Hill finished with 13 points and four boards.
  • Senior forward Payton Couture (Redford, N.Y./Saranac) recorded a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Cardinals.
  • Junior guard Kathy Peterson-Ross (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) scored 13 points for Plattsburgh and junior guard Jayden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) added 11.

Potsdam is back in action on Friday at 5:30 p.m. when the Bears host Oswego State.
