Lakers outlast Bears, 75-69

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Oswego State (8-5, 4-2 SUNYAC) overcame a halftime deficit to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (2-10, 2-4) 75-69 on Friday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lakers scored the first 14 points of the game through the first 3:56.
  • The Bears closed the half on a 34-17 run and led 34-31 at the break. Potsdam had a 12-0 stretch of their own to get with 28-27 at 4:23. Junior guard Khalil Screen (Providence, R.I./Classical) scored six of the points.
  • Oswego outscored Potsdam 15-4 to start the second half, including nine points from long range.
  • A 3-pointer from senior forward Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) with 49 seconds left got the Bears within 68-64. The Lakers then closed out the contest from the free-throw line.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Potsdam shot 43.9-percent from the floor to Oswego's 42.1.
  • The Lakers had a 39-32 edge on the glass.
  • Sophomore guard Nicholas Cortez (Harlem, N.Y./La Salle Academy scored a career-high 23 points to lead all scorers.
  • Kelly finished with 12 points and had seven rebounds.
  • Sophomore guard Mohammad Sylla (Bronx, N.Y./Darrow) also had 12 points to go with six assists and five rebounds.
  • Screen finished with 11 points and six boards.
  • Graduate student guard Cole Kattan (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) led the Lakers with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.
