Canton pulls away from Bears late

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Canton (1-13, 1-6 SUNYAC) used a late run to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (2-11, 2-5) 86-71 on Saturday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Kangaroos raced out to a 22-7 lead over the first nine minutes of the contest.
  • Potsdam whittled the lead down to 37-32 at the break, thanks in part to a strong performance at the free-throw line.
  • The Bears closed the first half on a 7-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from senior forward Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown).
  • An 8-2 run to start the second half, finished by another Kelly bucket, gave the Bears a 40-39 lead at 17:47.
  • A three from sophomore guard Ethan Baksh (Queens, N.Y./Richmond Hill) put the Bears up a final time at 7:42, 59-58.
  • Senior guard Walter deFreitas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) connected from long range to get the Bears within 68-65 at 4:05, but they couldn't get any closer.
  • Canton finished the contest on an 18-6 stretch to close out the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Canton shot a scorching 57.1-percent from the floor, while holding the Bears to 37.3.
  • The Roos outrebounded Potsdam 38-30.
  • Sophomore guard Nicholas Cortez (Harlem, N.Y./La Salle Academy) had a game-high 23 points, six rebounds and three assists.
  • Sophomore guard Mohammad Sylla (Bronx, N.Y./Darrow) recorded 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.
  • Kelly finished with 10 points and three blocks.
  • Senior guard Kevin Goode Jr. (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) led the Roos with 20 points and five steals.
