PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—Plattsburgh State (9-7-1, 4-3 SUNYAC) scored four goals in the third period to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (4-11-3, 2-5) 7-3 in a Wednesday night SUNYAC battle.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears took advantage of a power play to get on the board first at 10:45 of the first period. Sophomore defenseman Eli Doughart-Wood (St. Louis, Mo./Navan Grads) struck with assists from junior assistant captain Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario/Jersey Whalers) and junior forward Payton Felix (De Peyster, N.Y./Northeast Generals).
- The Cardinals tied the game at 17:16 on a goal from Kevin Weaver-Vitale. Ryan Bonfield and Jagger Benson assisted on the goal.
- Plattsburgh took the lead with just 24 seconds left in the first with a marker from Jake Sacratini. Tyler Ramm and Weaver-Vitale had the assists.
- Brody Spencer-Ha extended the Cardinal lead to 3-1 at 12:09 of the second period. Riley Sutherland and Spencer Bellina had the helpers.
- At 17:21 of the middle stanza, Campbell scored to get the Bears back within one. Junior forward Max Klanow (Holly, Mich./Hawkesbury Hawks) and junior forward Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks) picked up the assists.
- Plattsburgh regained its two-goal lead just 1:22 into the third period on a goal from Aaron Catron.
- Patrick Cole made it 5-2 at 7:09 with assists from Brannon Butler and Sutherland.
- Just 1:20 later Catron netted his second on a feed from Vladislav Pshenichnikov and Conlin Callanan.
- Sacratini scored the Cardinals' final goal at 40 seconds after that with assists from Ramm.
- Felix closed the scoring on the power play at 17:47 to get the Bears within 7-3.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Plattsburgh outshot Potsdam 51-30.
- The Bears were 2-for-3 on the power play and the Cardinals were 0-for-1.
- Junior goalie Lenny Perno stopped 40 shots and allowed six goals.
- Senior goalie John Werber made four saves and allowed a goal.
- Jacob Herne earned the win for Plattsburgh with 27 stops.
