POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (4-11-4, 2-5-1 SUNYAC) battled to a 1-1 stalemate with Oswego State (10-6-3, 6-2-1) on Friday evening at Maxcy Hall Ice Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lakers generated strong pressure in the first period. The strong play of the Bears senior goaltender John Werber (Skillman, N.J./Team Maryland) made 19 saves to keep the contest scoreless through 20 minutes.
- Oswego outshot the Bears 14-12 in an evenly played second period.
- The Bears finally broke through with 58 seconds left in the second. Sophomore forward Jack McCandless (Victor, N.Y./Richmond Generals) knocked a rebound off a shot from freshman forward Finnegan Kilmurray (Ottawa, Ontario/Smith Falls Bears) past Lakers junior goalie Brandon Milberg (Thornhill, Ontario/Sacred Heart).
- Potsdam led 1-0 after 40 minutes.
- Oswego tied the contest at 10:45 of the third period. Lakers freshman defenseman Nico Paone (Niagara Falls, Ontario/Navan Grads) picked off a Bears clearing attempt at the right point and fired. The puck was deflected into the top of the net.
- The Lakers had a 6-1 advantage in shots in the overtime period, but more stellar play from Werber preserved the draw.
- The Bears won the exhibition shootout 1-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Lakers outshot the Bears 54-24.
- Oswego was 0-for-2 on the power play and Potsdam went 0-for-1.
- Werber finished with a career-high 53 saves.
- Milberg made 23 stops.
