POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Canton (6-13-1, 3-6 SUNYAC) scored first, but the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (5-11-4, 3-5-1) responded two unanswered goals to pick up a critical 2-1 win and end a wins drought.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Canton junior forward Jack Seamans (Medicine Lake, Minn./Minnesota Mullets) opened the scoring off a rebound at 4:39 of the first period. Senior forward Brendan Morrow (Wetaskiwin, Alberta) took the initial shot off a pass from junior forward Evan Pringle (Aurora, Ontario/Oakville Blades).
- The Bears got even with just 39 seconds left in the first. Junior forward Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) won the faceoff to the left of the Kangaroos' goal. Junior forward Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks) picked up the puck at the top of the circle and wristed it into the top of the net.
- Potsdam took the lead at 16:40 of the second period on the power play. Junior forward Payton Felix (De Peyster, N.Y./Northeast Generals) knocked home the rebound off a shot from graduate student assistant captain Jack Loran (Massena, N.Y./New England Wolves). Junior forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Junior Islanders) notched the second assist.
- Canton pulled junior goalie Nate Hopkins (Wakefield, R.I./Seahawks Hockey Club) for an extra attacker with 1:24 remaining, but couldn't net the equalizer.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Canton outshot the Bears 38-32.
- Potsdam was 1-for-5 on the power play and the Roos went 0-for-4.
- Senior goalie John Werber (Skillman, N.J./Team Maryland) finished with 37 saves for his fifth career victory.
- Hopkins stopped 30 shots.
- The Bears finished 2-0 against the Roos in conference play this season.
