Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Bears upset No. 14 Cortland on the road, 4-2

CORTLAND, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (6-11-4, 4-5-1 SUNYAC) went into the Dragon's den on Friday night and doubled up 14th-ranked and SUNYAC-leading SUNY Cortland (15-6, 8-2) 4-2.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior forward Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks) got the Bears on the board first at 8:59 of the opening period. Junior forward Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) and junior assistant captain Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario/Jersey Whalers) each assisted on the goal.
  • At 17:57 of the first, Nathan Garnier got Cortland even with a power-play goal. Domenic Settimo and Johnny Facchini had the assists.
  • Just 54 seconds later, Junior forward Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals) put Potsdam back in front with a helper from junior forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders).
  • Hoehn struck again at 6:17 of the second period. Mahlmeister assisted on the play.
  • Stephen Kyrkostas got the Red Dragons within one with another power-play goal at 11:03 on helpers from Nate Berke and Evan Beaudry.
  • Sophomore forward Jakub Hall (Anchorage, Alaska/Richmond Generals) put the game out of reach at the 17:50 mark with an assist from freshman Owen Watson (Smiths Falls, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears) to make it 4-2.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Red Dragons outshot the Bears 48-19.
  • Cortland was 2-for-4 on the power play and Potsdam went 0-for-3.
  • The Bears continued to ride the hot goaltending of SUNYAC Goalie of the Week John Werber (Skillman, N.J./Team Maryland), who finished with 46 saves.
  • Ronan Mobley stopped 15 shots for the Red Dragons.
  • After a lengthy winless streak, the Bears are now 2-0-1 in their last three games.
  • The win keeps Potsdam even with SUNY Canton, a 4-3 winner at Buffalo State, for the final playoff spot in the SUNYAC.
  • The victory ends a five-game losing streak to the Red Dragons.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears head to Morrisville State tomorrow night for a 7 p.m. contest. Potsdam blanked the Mustangs 5-0 on November 22 in Maxcy Ice Arena.
