MORRISVILLE, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (7-11-4, 5-5-1 SUNYAC) scored three times in the second period and twice more in the third to defeat Morrisville State (3-19, 0-11) 5-1 on Saturday night. Junior forward
Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) scored two goals and senior goalie
John Werber (Skillman, N.J./Team Maryland) made 25 saves for his seventh career victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore forward Jack McCandless (Victor, N.Y./Richmond Generals) started the barrage with a goal just 41 seconds into the second period. Sophomore forward Jakub Hall (Anchorage, Alaska/Richmond Generals) picked up the assist.
- At 5:53, Parent made it 2-0 with assists from junior forwards Max Klanow (Holly, Mich./Hawkesbury Hawks) and Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks).
- Parent struck again at 9:19 with more helpers from Klanow and Quesnel. Potsdam led 3-0 after 40 minutes.
- The Bears got a power-play goal from junior forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders) at 3:47 of the third period. Sophomore defenseman Eli Doughart-Wood (St. Louis, Mo./Navan Grads) and junior assistant captain Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario/Jersey Whalers) had the assists.
- Sophomore defenseman Ben Presley (Greenwich, Conn./Protec Jr. Ducks) scored at 9:03 to make it 5-0. McCandless and freshman forward Andrew Blanchard (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Pennsylvania Huntsmen) assisted on the play.
- Morrisville's Ryan Glazier broke up the shutout with just 2:19 left.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Potsdam outshot the Mustangs 44-26.
- The Bears were 1-for-4 on the power play and Morrisville was 0-for-4.
- Will Goumas made 35 saves and allowed five goals in the first 49:03 for the Mustangs. Jeff Dreger stopped four shots in the last 10:57.
- Potsdam is back to .500 in the conference at 5-5-1.
- The Bears are now 3-0-1 in their last four contests, all with Werber in goal.
- Werber has stayed red hot, posting a 1.22 goals-against-average and a .970 save percentage during the last four games.
- Potsdam kept pace with SUNY Canton, a 2-1 overtime victor in Fredonia, staying tied with them and the Blue Devils in fourth place in the SUNYAC.
