Bears rally for 1-1 tie with Saint Mike’s

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Junior forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Junior Islanders) scored late in the third period to give the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (4-8-1) a 1-1 tie with Saint Michael's College (9-4-1) on Friday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Purple Knights opened the scoring at 9:26 of the second period. Senior defenseman David Ciancio (Scituate, R.I./Seahawks Hockey Club) finished a pass from freshman forward Patrick Last (Derry, N.H./Twin City Thunder).
  • The Bears finally got even at 14:41 of the third period as junior forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Junior Islanders) picked off a clearing attempt and wrapped the puck around Saint Mike's junior goalie Cole Manahan (Hermantown, Minn./Vernal Oilers) to tie the score.   
  • Saint Mike's outshot the Bears 5-0 in overtime before winning the exhibition shootout 2-1.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears outshot the Purple Knights 41-27.
  • Saint Michael's was 0-for-2 on the power play, while Potsdam went 0-for-3.
  • Sophomore goalie Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) made 26 saves for the Bears.
  • Manahan finished with 40 stops for Saint Mike's.
  • Potsdam is now 15-0-2 in the all-time series with the Purple Knights, dating back to a 6-4 win in Maxcy on November 2, 1984.
