POTSDAM, N.Y.- In an intense battle Saturday afternoon, Saint Michael's College (9-4-2) and the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (4-8-2) tied 3-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Purple Knights scored at 3:28 of the first period. Sophomore forward Ty Bloom (Helena, Mont./Helena Bighorns) finished a feed from freshmen forward Roman Winicki (Setauket, N.Y./Philadelphia Hockey Club).
- Graduate student assistant captain Jack Loran (Massena, N.Y./New England Wolves) scored a goal at 18:08 for the Bears. Junior forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Junior Islanders) and junior forward Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) assisted on the goal.
- With nine seconds left in the first period, senior forward Jack Bavis (West Roxbury, Mass./Valley Jr. Pics) scored to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. The goal was assisted by senior defensemen Case Kantgias (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Northern Colorado Eagles) and junior forward Nick Wracker (Columbia, S.C./Northeast Generals).
- The Bears started off hot in the second period with a quick goal from Mahlmeister at the 4:09 mark. Junior assistant captain Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario/Jersey Whalers) and Loran assisted on the goal.
- The Bears produced their third goal at 16:37 of the second from freshmen forward Owen Watson (Smith Falls, Ontario/Smith Falls Bears). Junior forward Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals) and sophomore forward Jakub Hall (Anchorage, Alaska/Richmond Generals) each picked up an assist.
- The Purple Knights managed to secure a goal to tie the game at 9:47of the third period. Senior defensemen David Ciancio (Scituate, R.I./Seahawks Hockey Club) scored the goal with helpers Bavis and Kantgias.
- The Bears won the exhibition shootout 2-1, on goals by Hall and Watson.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Potsdam outshot Saint Mike's 47-34.
- Potsdam went 0-4 on the power play and Saint Mike's went 0-3.
- Junior goalie Cole Manahan (Hermantown, Minn./Vernal Oilers) tallied 44 saves for the Purple Knights.
- Senior goalie John Werber (Skillman, N.J.) finished with 31 saves for the Bears.
- Potsdam is now 15-0-3 against Saint Mike's in the all-time series.
