No. 14 Mules down Bears in first round of Castleton Tourney, 3-1

CASTLETON, VT.—No. 14 Colby College (6-2) scored twice in the second period en route to a 3-1 of win over the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (3-4-1) in the first round of the Castleton Bagley Invitational.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first period, the Mules found the back of the net twice in the last 2:10 of the second period.
  • Maria Pierce opened the scoring at 17:50 with assists from Breanna Studley and Georgia Pettygrove.
  • Jo Tattersall made it 2-0 with just 43 seconds left. Molly Lefebvre and Lulu Gray recorded the assists.
  • Kate Pura added a third goal for Colby at 13:26 of the third period.
  • Junior defenseman Rachelle Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) scored a power-play goal with just 2:12 remaining with assists from senior captain Sara Barrett (Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and freshman defenseman Cailyn Canuel (Montreal, Quebec/Bourget College) to get the Bears within 3-1.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Colby outshot the Bears 40-18.
  • Potsdam was 1-for-4 on the power play, while Colby finished 0-for-4.
  • Senior goalie Hannah Barrett (Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) made 37 saves.
  • Mules goalie Mandy Busky stopped 17 shots for the win.
