FREDONIA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (1-0) defeated SUNY Fredonia (0-1) 4-2 in a nonconference contest to open the 2025-26 season. Senior forward
Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders) scored two goals, including the game-winner. The victory was the first of interim head coach
Mike Grace's collegiate career.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears jumped on the board first as freshman Platon Krasnoiarov (Khabarovsk, Russia/New Hampshire Mountain Kings) scored his first collegiate goal at 3:20 of the first period. Junior assistant captain (Eli Doughart-Wood (St. Louis, Mo./Navan Grads) recorded the assist.
- The Blue Devils tied the game at 15:35 of the second on a goal from Antoine St. Onge. Hudson Cameron had the assist.
- Mahlmeister made it 2-1 at 16:31 of the second with a helper from senior assistant captain Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals).
- St. Onge tied it again just seven seconds into the third period.
- Mahlmeister countered just 16 seconds later for the eventual game-winner.
- Senior forward Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks) closed the scoring at 5:08, increasing the lead to 4-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Fredonia outshot the Bears 43-30 in the contest.
- Potsdam was 0-for-4 on the power play and the Blue Devils went 0-for-3
- Bears junior goalie Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) made 41 saves including 22 in the second period. It was the 10th victory of his career.
