Golden Wolves down Bears in OT, 2-1

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Alvernia University (1-0) scored with 23 seconds left in overtime to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (0-1) 2-1 in the season opener.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears struck first while on a 5-on-3 power play at 14:06 of the first period. Junior defender Jessika Bullock (Norfolk, N.Y./Adirondack 46ers) fired a shot from the middle of the blue line. Senior forward Isabel Boyd (Norwood, N.Y./Adirondack) tipped it past Alvernia sophomore goalie Stephanie Skorupa (Des Plaines, Ill./Main West). Senior defender Elise Clifford (Auburn, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) picked up the second assist. The goal was the first of Boyd's career.
  • The Golden Wolves tied the game at 19:11 of the second period. Sophomore defender Marissa Caswell (Export, Pa./Penn-Trafford) picked up a loose puck in her own zone and hit freshman forward Alexis Oliveira (Ledgewood, N.J./Roxbury) in stride. Oliveria went around a Potsdam defender and beat senior captain Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières) with a low wrister on her glove side.
  • Parent made four saves in overtime. With 23 seconds remaining, sophomore forward Emma Hart (Gilbert, Ariz./Ontario Hockey Academy) fired from the left corner and beat a screened Parent for the game-winner. Freshman defenseman Erin Schutt (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) had the assist.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears outshot the Golden Wolves 28-20.
  • Potsdam was 1-for-4 on the power play and Alvernia was 0-for-4.
  • Parent finished with 18 saves.
  • Skorupa stopped 27 shots for the win.
  • The contest was the first ever meeting between the two programs.
