Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Bears get revenge against Alvernia, 2-1

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (1-1) rallied for a 2-1 triumph over Alvernia University (1-1) on Saturday afternoon. The victory avenges yesterday's Golden Wolves win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Golden Wolves got on the board first at 1:46 of the second period. Sophomore defenseman Marissa Caswell (Export, Pa./Penn-Trafford) stole the puck at her own blue line and went the length of the ice, ripping shot off the crossbar and in.
  • The Bears got even at 16:24 of the second as senior forward Alessia Marandola (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Jr. Hornets) scored from the slot. Senior forward Rebecca Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) and junior forward Jalynn Castro (Dexter, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) each had the assists.
  • Castro put the Bears in front 4:35 into the third period with a one-timer from the slot on a feed from Cain. Marandola started the play by digging the puck free in the right corner.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Potsdam outshot Alvernia 24-21.
  • Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play.
  • Bears sophomore goalie Maddy Ferguson (Medicine Hat, Alberta/South Alberta Hockey Academy) made 21 saves for her third career victory.
  • Golden Wolves senior goalie JuJu Rodgers (Roswell, Ga./Johnson Ferry Christian) stopped 22 shots.

EVERY CHILD MATTERS
The Bears wore orange jerseys during the game to spread awareness for Native American children in Canada and the U.S. who survived the residential school system or didn't return home, as well as their families and communities.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears head to No. 13 Elmira College for games next Friday and Saturday. They square off with the Soaring Eagles at 3 p.m. both days.
