Bears fall to Brewers in five sets

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Vassar College (13-3) rallied for a 3-2 win over the SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball (7-8) on Saturday afternoon at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After trailing early, the Bears rallied for a 16-12 lead in set one. However, the Brewers finished on a 13-3 run to capture the 25-19 win. Freshman outside hitter Ashlee Hagerman (Kirkwood, N.Y./Windsor) had four kills and junior middle hitter Jacqueline Fornabia (Gansevoort, N.Y./Saratoga Central Catholic) added two.
  • In set two, the Bears trailed 5-4 early, but never again as they evened the match with a 25-17 win. Hagerman had three more kills.
  • A Hagerman ace in set three put Potsdam up 11-3 and the Bears went on to a 25-21 win. Junior middle hitter Noelle Redeye (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Silver Creek) led the way with four kills and Hagerman had another two.
  • The Brewers rolled to a 25-11 win in set four to even the match. Bears senior captain Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) and Redeye each had two kills.
  • The final set was back and forth before Vassar closed the match with a 15-12 win. Freshman middle hitter Logan Georgia (Owego, N.Y./Owego) recorded two kills.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Hagerman finished with 10 kills, nine digs and six aces.
  • Layer posted six kills, 13 digs, six assists and two blocks.
  • Redeye had six kills and four blocks.
  • Georgia had three blocks.
  • Junior setter Gabriella Luna (Schenectady, N.Y./Mekeel Christian Academy) contributed 13 assists.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears are back in action next Friday when they host SUNY Canton at 6 p.m. for a SUNYAC Contest.
