POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Poly (2-1) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (0-1) 83-60 in the Bears season opener in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• The contest was back and forth over the first 7:17. A layup from sophomore guard Mike Hancock (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) tied the game at 13 apiece.
• A jumper from sophomore Bryson Brown (New York, N.Y./Mercersburg Academy) got Potsdam within 20-18, but the Wildcats closed the half on a 21-7 run for a 41-25 advantage.
• A 13-4 run to start the second half gave the Wildcats a commanding 54-30 lead.
• Scoring was nearly even the rest of the way, but Potsdam couldn't gain ground.

 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• The Wildcats shot a scorching 54.2-percent from the floor, including a 34.6 pace from beyond the arc.
• The Bears shot 33.3-percent.
• SUNY Poly finished with a 51-29 edge in rebounding.
• Senior guard Jaylen Singh (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Rockvale) led the Bears with 11 points, coming in a four-minute outburst.
• Hancock and Brown each finished with nine points with seven and six rebounds, respectively.   
• Freshman guard Bobby Kemokai (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) had eight points and seven boards in his collegiate debut.
• Senior forward Anthony Rose (Bronx, N.Y./Fannie Lou Hamer) led the Wildcats with 13 points and seven rebounds.
• SUNY Poly senior guard William Scanlon (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) also had double digits with 12 points.
