CANTON, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (3-2, 1-0 SUNYAC) scored four times in the second period en route to a 7-3 win at SUNY Canton (4-1, 0-1) in the teams' SUNYAC opener. Sophomore forward
Owen Watson (Smiths Falls, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears) recorded his first career hat trick in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- At 5:15 of the first period, Watson intercepted a Canton clearing attempt in the slot and buried it for a 1-0 lead.
- Canton tied the game 4:02 into the second period on a goal from Spencer Sasenbury. Niko Schoner and Colton Alexander assisted on the goal.
- Senior forward Max Klanow put the Bears back in front just 31 seconds later. Senior forward Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks) and junior defenseman Samuel De Mauro (Montreal, Quebec/Kirkland Lake Gold Miners) had the assists.
- Senior forward Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) made it 3-1 at 12:20 of the second.
- Watson netted his second less than two minutes later at 14:08. Sophomore defenseman Lucas Salas (Hazlet, N.J./New Jersey 87's) and junior assistant captain Eli Doughart-Wood (St. Louis, Mo./Navan Grads) had the assists.
- Watson struck again at 1:03 later to complete his hat trick to make it 5-1 at 15:11. Doughart-Wood and Parent had the assists.
- Jordan Mughal netted Canton's second goal at 2:41 of the third period with helpers form Brayden Fryfogle and Williams Forsberg.
- Sasenbury scored again 5:00 with assists from Logan Kelly and Scott Cremen and the hosts were in striking distance at 5-3.
- However, Doughart-Wood scored an empty netter with an assist from Salas at 16:23.
- Sophomore forward Finnigan Kilmurray (Ottawa, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears) put the game away with another empty-netter at 18:27.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Bears junior goalie Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) made 30 saves for his 12th career victory.
- Trey Miller allowed four goals and made 21 stops in the first 34:08 for Canton. Kelson Hooper allowed one goal and made nine saves in the next 24:13.
- The seven goals were the most scored by the Bears since a 7-4 win over Plattsburgh on February 2, 2019.
