POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (3-2, 1-0 SUNYAC) erased a two-goal deficit in the third period with a three-goal burst to defeat Buffalo State (3-2, 0-1) 3-2 on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- There was no scoring in the first period, but the Bears rang the crossbar and killed two Bengals power play opportunities.
- Buffalo State finally broke the stalemate at 18:58 of the middle stanza. Graduate student forward Sage Running Rabbit (Siksika, Alberta/Elite Southern Express) fed freshman forward Taylor Masterson (Niagara Falls, Ontario/Niagara Falls Rapids) in the slot and she wristed it into the upper right corner of the net. Junior forward Sydney Radecki (Lancaster, N.Y./Buffalo Regals) had the second assist.
- Buffalo State doubled the lead with a shorthanded marker at 8:43 of the third. Sophomore defensemen Sequoia Recollett-Nebenionquit (Naughton, Ontario/Sudbury Lady Wolves) blocked a shot and flicked it ahead to senior forward Vanessa Willick (Williamsville, N.Y./Buffalo Bison). Willick went the length of the ice all by herself to make it 2-0.
- The Bears scored twice in 23 seconds to tie the game.
- Freshman forward Tegan Konecnik (Fenton, Mo./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 19U AAA) stole the puck on a clearing attempt and beat Bengals freshman goalie Amelia Knott (North Adelaide, Australia/Lovell Academy) for her first collegiate goal to get the Bears on the board at 10:57 of the third.
- At 11:20, freshman forward Coralie Paradis (Montreal, Quebec/Bourget College) buried her first Bears goal off a pass from freshman forward Jayne Gamburg (Upper Dublin, Pa./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers). Freshman defenseman Mara Edwards (Kingston, Ontario/Kingston Ice Wolves) had the other assist.
- With just 43.7 seconds left in the contest, junior forward Jalynn Castro (Dexter, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) poked the puck away from a Bengals defender on the doorstep and backhanded it past Knott for the game-winner.
