POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (3-3, 1-1 SUNYAC) scored first, but William Smith College (3-1, 1-1) scored twice in the third period to claim the 3-1 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears struck first at 11:22 of the first period. Freshman forward Coralie Paradis (Montreal, Quebec/Bourget College) finished a pass from freshman forward Marissa Whiteside (Long Sault, Ontario/Cornwall Lady Royals) after a failed Heron clearing attempt. It was her second goal of the weekend and Whiteside's first collegiate point.
- William Smith tied the game at 18:55. Freshman forward Finley Crosby (Osterville, Mass./Middlesex) dug the puck free from the left boards and junior defenseman Laine Heiser (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) fired from the left faceoff circle to make it 1-1.
- There was no scoring in the second period.
- The Herons took advantage of a Potsdam boarding penalty at 7:28. Crosby ripped a pass from sophomore forward Rowan Kennedy (Centennial, Colo./Brooks School) into the top right corner of the net. Sophomore forward Bella Hacker (Burlington, Mass./Brooks) started the play behind the net and earned the second assist.
- With just 36.4 seconds remaining, sophomore defenseman Madeline Diglio (Morris Plains, N.J./Canterbury) scored an insurance marker on the power play to close the scoring at 3-1. Hacker and junior defenseman Tara Valas (Raleigh, N.C./Pomfret) had the assists.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Bears outshot the Herons 28-26.
- William Smith was 2-for-4 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-1.
- Bears senior captain Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec/Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières) made 23 saves.
- Herons junior goalie Mia Iwicki (Mashpee, Mass./St. Mark's School) stopped 27 shots to earn the win.
