Golden Knights hold off Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Clarkson University (4-2) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (0-5) 62-52 on Tuesday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears opened the contest on a 10-3 run over the first five minutes, with freshman center Batualp Ozen (Ankara, Turkey/Furtah Prep) scoring six points during the run.
  • The Golden Knights chipped away at the lead and a layup from junior forward Braeden Burns (Jamesville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) gave Clarkson a 20-19 edge. They never trailed again.
  • Clarkson led 33-24 at the break.
  • The Golden Knights opened the second half on 15-3 run to grab a 48-27 lead at the 10:44 mark.
  • Potsdam responded with a 19-8 run to get within 56-46 with 1:50 to play. Freshman forward Landon Cox (Dickinson Center, N.Y./Brushton-Moira) scored 11 points during the stretch.
  • Clarkson closed out the win with a layup and four free throws.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Golden Knights shot 46.3 percent from the floor, while holding the Bears to 27.4.
  • Clarkson edged the Potsdam 44-42 on the glass.
  • Cox finished with a career-high 14 points along with five rebounds to pace Potsdam.
  • Sophomore guard Mike Hancock (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) had eight points and seven rebounds and junior captain Ethan Baksh (Queens, N.Y./Richmond Hill) finished with seven points and two boards.
  • Burns led Clarkson with 21 points and eight rebounds.
