Seery lifts Bears over Roos in OT, 4-3

POTSDAM, N.Y.—In front of nearly 1,000 local elementary school students, the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (4-4) defeated SUNY Canton (4-5) 4-3 in overtime on a goal from junior defenseman Rocco Seery (Bloomingdale, Ill./East Coast Wizards). The Bears' "School Day" game was attended by students from Lawrence Avenue Elementary, Norwood-Norfolk Elementary and the sixth grade from St. Lawrence Central.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Canton broke the ice at 12:58 of the first period. Junior forward Jackson Drysdale (Owen Sound, Ontario/Brantford 99ers) scored from the left faceoff circle. Junior forward Nico Shoener (Bloomingdale, Ill./Nashville Spartans) and freshman forward Colton Alexander (Cochrane, Alberta/Neepawa Titans) had the assists.
  • Kangaroo penalties gave Potsdam a five-on-three power play and the Bears made the most of the opportunity.
  • Senior forward Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) found junior assistant captain Eli Doughart-Wood (St. Louis, Mo./Navan Grads) at the right point. He ripped a shot past Canton senior goalie Kelson Hooper (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights) to tie the score. Sophomore forward Owen Watson (Smiths Falls, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears) started play in the left corner and picked up the second assist.
  • Canton regained the lead with a power-play goal at 16:27 of the second period. The Roos went point-to-point to sophomore forward Logan Kelly (Cobourg, Ontario/Cobourg Cougars) in the left faceoff circle. Kelly one-timed a shot past Bears sophomore goalie Luciano Chinappi (Hilton, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers). Senior defenseman Scott Cremen (Arnold, Md./Team Maryland) and senior forward Evan Pringle (Aurora, Ontario/Oakville Blades) picked up the assists.
  • Drysdale gave the Roos a 3-1 lead with a shorthanded goal 3:32 into the third period. Junior forward Conor O'Brien (Wilbraham, Mass./Powassan Voodoos) and sophomore defenseman Jake Howard (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Utah Outliers) earned the assists with the breakout.
  • The Bears answered just 52 seconds later. Sophomore forward Finnegan Kilmurray (Ottawa, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears) intercepted a Canton pass and fed freshman forward Platon Krasnoiarov (Khabarovsk, Russia/New Hampshire Mountain Kings) in stride. Krasnoiarov then beat Hooper to make it 3-2.
  • At 15:15, junior forward Will O'Brien (Jefferson Hills, Pa./HC Rhode Island) knocked home a rebound off a shot by senior forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders) to tie the game. Watson had the second assist.
  • Just 40 seconds into overtime, senior forward Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks) picked up a loose puck behind the Bears net and carried down the ice. He left it at the left point for Seery, who fired from the left faceoff circle to beat Hooper for the game-winner.
