Red Dragons pull away from Bears

CORTLAND, N.Y. – SUNY Cortland (5-4-1, 3-1-1) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (4-5, 1-3) 6-2 on Friday evening. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Red Dragons struck first with a goal by Nathan Garnier at 13:33 in the first period. Nick Serio and Morley Phillips picked up the assists. 
  • Potsdam tied the game less than three minutes later with a power-play goal from junior forward Jakub Hall (Anchorage, Alaska/Richmond Generals), assisted by freshman forward Platon Krasnoiarov (Khabarovsk, Russia/New Hampshire Mountain Kings) and senior captain Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario Jersey Whalers). 
  • Phillips put Cortland back in front early in the second period with assists from Garnier and Charlie Merkley. 
  • Hall netted his second of the night shortly after, assisted by junior assistant captain Eli Doughart-Wood (St. Louis, Mo./Navan Grads) and junior defender Rocco Seery (Bloomingdale, Ill./East Coast Wizards). 
  • Garnier picked up his third point of the night with a second goal, assisted by Merkley and Nate Boak. 
  • Thomas Rockey added a third in the period for the Red Dragons less than a minute later. Connor Humphrey and Colby Seitz had the assists. 
  • Garnier completed the hat trick on the power play with six seconds to go in the second period with assists from JC Humphreys and Sam Christiano, putting Cortland up 5-2. 
  • The Red Dragons added to their tally with a sixth goal late in the third period, scored by Stephen Kyrkostas and assisted by Devlin O'Kane. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Cortland outshot Potsdam 35-24. 
  • The Bears were 1-for-3 on the power play, and the Red Dragons were 1-for-2. 
  • Junior goaltender Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) made 17 saves and allowed three goals in the first 31:21. Sophomore Luciano Chinappi (Hilton, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) finished with 12 saves and allowed three goals in 28:39. 
  • Shane Shelest had 22 saves and allowed two goals to earn the win for Cortland.
