Bears rough up Mustangs, Chinappi earns first shutout

MORRISVILLE, N.Y.—Sophomore goalie Luciano Chinappi (Hilton, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) stopped all 26 shots he faced and senior forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders) scored twice as the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (5-5, 2-3 SUNYAC) shut out SUNY Morrisville (2-7-2, 1-3-2) 6-0 on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears struck just 3:49 into the first period. Senior assistant captain Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals) made it 1-0 with assists from Mahlmeister and sophomore defenseman Lucas Salas (Hazlet, N.J./New Jersey 87's).
  • Less than three minutes later, the Mustangs were called for tripping and Potsdam made them pay. Junior assistant captain Eli Doughart-Wood (St. Louis, Mo./Navan Grads) doubled the lead. Senior forward Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) and sophomore forward Owen Watson (Smiths Falls, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears) assisted on the goal.
  • Senior forward Max Klanow (Holly, Mich./Hawkesbury Hawks) made it 3-0 at 13:40 of the first period. Senior forward Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks) and Parent had the assists.
  • Sophomore forward Garrett McCabe (London, Ontario/Brantford 99ers) scored Potsdam's fourth goal 1:59 into the second period with assists from Watson and junior forward Jakub Hall (Anchorage, Alaska/Richmond Generals).
  • Mahlmeister gave the Bears a 5-0 advantage just 28 seconds later.
  • At 13:50 of the third period, Mahlmeister netted his second to close the scoring with helpers from McCabe and Watson.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBER
  • The Bears outshot the Mustangs 51-26.
  • Morrisville goalie Will Goumas allowed five goals and stopped 29 shots in the first 41:24. Grant Linville allowed a goal and made 16 saves in the last 18:36.
  • Potsdam was 1-for-8 on the power play and Morrisville went 0-for-3.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears head to the Boston Landing Collegiate Invitational on January 3, to take on Nichols College in the first round at 4:40 p.m.
