Bears edged by Bison in Boston tourney opener, 3-1

BOSTON, MASS—Nichols College (5-6) scored twice late to upend the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (5-6) 3-1 in the first round of the Boston Landing Collegiate Invitational on Saturday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CJ Zezima opened the scoring with a power-play goal to give the Bison a 1-0 lead at 14:41 of the first period. Luca Ricci and Tristan Kimmen had the assists.
  • The Bears outshot Nichols 15-10 in the second period, thanks in part to two power plays, but still trailed 1-0 after 40 minutes.
  • Potsdam finally got even at 12:25 of the third period. Sophomore forward Owen Watson (Smiths Falls, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears) blasted home a deflection off a shot from senior captain Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario/Jersey Whalers) in the right faceoff circle. Senior forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders) picked up the second assist.
  • The Bison answered just 1:22 later as Aaron Hamel finished a two-on-one to make it a 2-1 contest. Kimmen and Gavin Duckworth earned the assists.
  • Nichols tacked on an insurance marker with 57 seconds to go. Jeremy Tremblay netted the Bison's third goal with an assist from Liam Boswell.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Nichol's outshot Potsdam 39-31.
  • The Bison were 1-for-1 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-4.
  • Sophomore goalie Luciano Chinappi (Hilton, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) made 36 saves for the Bears.
  • Nichols goaltender Ryan Henry stopped 30 shots for the for the win.
  •  The matchup was the first ever between the two programs.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears will face either Southern New Hampshire University or Connecticut College in tomorrow's consolation game at 5:40 p.m.
