Penmen down Bears in tourney consolation

BOSTON, MASS.—Southern New Hampshire University (5-7-1) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (5-7) 6-2 in the consolation game of the Boston Landing Collegiate Invitational on Sunday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ryan Pomposelli opened the scoring at 6:53 of the first period with assists from Gavin Simon and Brendan Lynch.
  • Coleman Nee gave the Penmen a 2-0 lead at 9:09 of the first period. Zach Vickerman and Anthony Marchant had the assists.
  • Darby McCarthy opened up a three-goal lead with helpers from Kurt Watson and Lynch at 3:58 of the second period.
  • Just 53 seconds later, Watson made it 4-0 SNHU on assists from Pomposelli and Aidan Rufa.
  • Bryan Kim scored a power-play goal at 13:16 of the second period for a five-goal advantage. Stone Devlin and Vickerman picked up the assists.
  • Senior captain Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals) finally got the Bears on the board at 14:18, finishing a feed from freshman forward Platon Krasnoiarov (Khabarovsk, Russia/New Hampshire Mountain Kings).
  • Junior forward Andrew Gubbins (South Pomfret, Vt./Woodstock Union) netted his first career goal 2:10 into the third period to get Potsdam within 5-2. Sophomore forward Andrew Blanchard (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Pennsylvania Huntsmen) and senior captain Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario/Jersey Whalers) each assisted on the goal.
  • Lynch tacked on an empty netter at 16:38 of the third with an assist from McCarthy.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • SNHU outshot the Bears 39-32 in the contest.
  • The Penmen were 1-for-3 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-2.
  • Sophomore goalie Luciano Chinappi (Hilton, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) made 33 saves for the Bears.
  • Collin Berke stopped 30 shots to earn the win for the Penmen.
  • Potsdam is now 2-1-1 in the all-time series with SNHU.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears return home on Friday to resume SUNYAC play against Buffalo State at 7 p.m.
