POTSDAM, N.Y.—Clarkson University (13-13) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (8-17) 3-0 on Tuesday night. Senior captain
Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) became the fourth Bear to reach the 2000-assist plateau in the last 20 years.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Potsdam got within 13-10 in set one before Clarkson closed out a 25-15 win. Junior middle hitter Noelle Redeye (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Silver Creek) had three kills for the Bears and freshman outside hitter Ashlee Hagerman (Kirkwood, N.Y./Windsor) added two.
- The Golden Knights took set two 25-13. Hagerman and junior outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) each recorded three kills.
- Potsdam closed to within 15-14 in the third set, but Clarkson used a 10-3 run to finish off the set 25-17 and the match 3-0. Hagerman closed her night with six more kills. Prest had two.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Hagerman led the Bears with 11 kills, nine digs and a block. Prest finished with seven kills, and six digs. Redeye had five kills.
- Layer finished with 21 assists, giving her 2,019 for her career with two matches to play.
- Junior setter Rachel Madore (Peru, N.Y./Peru) had a match-best 15 kills.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears wrap up their season with two home matches on Saturday. They host SUNY Canton at noon and St. Lawrence at 2:30 p.m. The Bears will honor seniors Layer, Prest (graduating early) and junior Madison Gilliand (Rossville, Ga./Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe) prior to the contest with the Kangaroos.
