Lions overpower Potsdam in first round of Naz Tourney

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—Piedmont University (3-5) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (2-6) 84-51 in the first round of the Sandy DeWolf McCormack Memorial Holiday Tournament at Nazareth College on Saturday night.
                                                                                     
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was all Lions in the first quarter as they outscored the Bears 24-5. Graduate student captain Xy'El Bradford (Syracuse, N.Y./Syracuse Academy of Science) scored three points for Potsdam and sophomore guard Emily Smith (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) had the other two.
  • The Bears nearly kept pace in the second quarter, as Piedmont finished with a 23-19 edge. Bradford scored five more points and freshman guard Lucie Scarpine (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore) had four including a 3-pointer. The Lions led 47-24 at the half.
  • Potsdam outscored the Lions 19-18 in the third quarter. Piedmont still led 65-43 after 30 minutes. Freshman forward Kierra Baxter (Liverpool, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) had five points, including a three, and Scarpine had four more with another three.
  • The Lions closed out the 84-51 victory with a 19-8 fourth quarter. Freshman Lillian Hoyt (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell) and Baxter each had threes.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBER
  • Piedmont shot 47.9-percent from the floor to Potsdam's 34.7.
  • The Lions outrebounded the Bears 43-35.
  • Bradford finished with 10 points and four rebounds.
  • Scarpine scored eight points.
  • Gracie Deetz and Ava Hunter led the Lions with 16 points apiece.
  • The meeting was the first ever between the two programs.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears face Westminster College (Pa.) in tomorrow's 1 p.m. consolation matchup.
