ROCHESTER, N.Y.—Westminster College (Pa.) (4-5) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (2-7) 55-44 in the consolation game of the Sandy DeWolf McCormack Memorial Holiday Tournament at Nazareth College on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Titans outscored the Bears 14-11 in the first quarter. Junior captain Sara Richards (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./AuSable Valley) scored five points for Potsdam, including a three. Freshman guard Lucie Scarpine (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore) also hit a three.
- Westminster managed to just stay out in front in the second quarter, edging the Bears 15-12 and taking a 29-23 edge into the break. Scarpine had five more points, hitting another three. Freshman guard Lillian Hoyt (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell) also scored from long range.
- The Titans created a bit more separation in the third quarter with a 20-13 advantage. They led 49-36 after 30 minutes. Senior guard Paris Jones (Houston, Texas/Dulles) had four points in the third and Scarpine added another 3-pointer.
- The fourth quarter was a low scoring affair with Potsdam outscoring the Titans 8-6. Freshman guard Olivia Cook (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and Hoyt each hit threes.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Westminster shot 35.3-percent from the floor and the Bears shot 28.1.
- The Titans outrebounded Potsdam 47-34.
- Scarpine led the Bears with 12 points and four rebounds.
- Richards scored seven points, while Jones and Hoyt each had six.
- Grace Cano paced the Titans with a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds.
- Katie Maryo had 11 points for Westminster.
- The contest was the first meeting between the two teams.
