Bears slay Bengals in SUNYAC opener


POTSDAM, N.Y.-- The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (2-4, 1-0) defeated the Buffalo State Bengals (0-6, 0-1) 62-57 on Friday evening in the teams' SUNYAC opener. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first quarter was closely contested with four lead changes as the Bears finished on top, 13-12. Senior forward DaeLynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) led all scorers with six points. 
  • The Bengals led for most of the second quarter. Scoring ended 11-11 as the Bears took the lead with six seconds to go on a free throw from junior guard Sara Richards (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./AuSable Valley). Freshman forward Kierra Baxter (Liverpool, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) hit her second 3-pointer of the game to reach six points. 
  • Another close quarter in the third saw five lead changes. The Bengals outscored the Bears 19-17. Freshman guard Olivia Cook (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) hit a jumper at the buzzer to put the Bears within one, finishing the quarter down 42-41. 
  • The Bears continued gaining momentum, outscoring the Bengals 21-15 in the fourth quarter and earning the win. Alcock recorded another seven points. Freshman guard Lucie Scarpine (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore) had five points and hit her second 3-pointer of the half. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • There were seven ties and 17 lead changes. 
  • The Bears shot 37.5-percent from the floor to the Bengals' 33.3.
  • Potsdam outrebounded Buffalo State 45-32. 
  • Alcock led all scorers with 16 points and three steals. 
  • Cook had a career-high 15 points and five assists. 
  • Junior forward Imani McNeil (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie) led the Bengals with 12 points. Former Bear and sophomore guard Amaya Moore (Hudson, N.Y./Hudson) and junior forward Mya Brown (Buffalo, N.Y./Frontier) each had 11 points. 

WHAT'S NEXT? 
The Bears take on the Fredonia Blue Devils tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
