Blue Devils pull away from Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y. – SUNY Fredonia (5-2, 1-1) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (2-5, 1-1) 70-48 on Saturday afternoon in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Fredonia outscored the Bears 21-11 in the first quarter, going on a 10-3 run spanning five and a half minutes to reach a sizable lead. Graduate guard Xy'El Bradford (Syracuse, N.Y./Syracuse Academy of Science) had a layup in the last second of the quarter to put the Bears in double digits. Freshman guard Lucie Scarpine (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore) led Potsdam with five points. 
  • The Blue Devils extended their lead to 34-21 in the second quarter, holding the Bears to 10 points. A layup at the buzzer by sophomore center Reese Shambo (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./AuSable Valley) got Potsdam to double digits. Bradford led Potsdam at the half with eight points, and Scarpine was close behind with seven. 
  • In the third quarter, the Bears were outscored 24-17, despite going on a four-minute 11-4 run. The Blue Devils reached their largest lead of the game, going up by 20 to end the quarter 58-38. Senior guard DaeLynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) racked up 10 points in the quarter. 
  • The fourth quarter ended 12-10 in favor of Fredonia. The Bears faced their largest deficit of the game midway through the quarter, going down by 26. The Blue Devils defeated the Bears 70-48. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Fredonia had a slight advantage in field-goal percentage, shooting 35.9-percent from the floor. Potsdam shot 32.0-percent. 
  • The Bears were outrebounded 46-33. 
  • Potsdam's bench scored 23 points compared to the Blue Devils' 7. 
  • Alcock led the Bears with 12 points and four steals. Bradford finished with 11 points. 
  • Junior forward Payton Gilbert (Union Springs, N.Y./Union Springs) led all scorers with 20 points and seven steals. Junior guard Grace Alexander (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) had 19 points.

The Bears travel to Rochester, N.Y., to compete in the Nazareth Holiday Tournament, taking on Piedmont on Saturday, December 13 at 6 p.m.
