Raiders escape Bears in OT, 3-2

NASHUA, N.H. – Rivier University (6-4-0) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (4-5-1) 3-2 in overtime on Saturday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Junior forward Jalynn Castro (Dexter, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) got the Bears on the board first early in the second period, assisted by senior forward Rebecca Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) and freshman defenseman Mara Edwards (Kingston, Ontario/Kingston Ice Wolves). 
  • Rivier responded late in the period with two goals in 30 seconds. 
  • Kayley Young tied the game in the twelfth minute, scoring unassisted. 
  • Lillian Wojcicki put the Raiders ahead 2-1 with an assist from Mary Kelley. 
  • Senior defenseman Elise Clifford (Auburn, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) netted the Bears' second of the game late in the third period with less than two minutes left in regulation. Castro and senior forward Megan Mills (Mono, Ontario/North York Storm) picked up the assists. 
  • Jessica Driscoll tapped it over the line with 11 seconds to go in overtime as the Raiders defeated the Bears 3-2. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • The Raiders pick up their first-ever win over the Bears in eight meetings. 
  • Rivier had a slight advantage in shots with 38 to Potsdam's 30. 
  • The Bears were 0-for-2 on the power play, and the Raiders were 0-for-5. 
  • Freshman goaltender Alyssa Barnard (Kemble, Ontario/Hockey Training Institute) made 25 saves and allowed three goals in her collegiate debut, earning a .921 save percentage. 
  • Taylor Bruno had 28 saves and allowed two goals. 

WHAT'S NEXT
The Bears travel to Castleton, Vt., on Friday, January 2, for the Castleton Invitational. They'll take on the Worcester State Lancers at 7 p.m. in the first round.
