Lancers blank Bears in Castleton Tourney first round, 2-0

RUTLAND, VT.—Worcester State (6-5) scored in the first and third periods to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (4-6-1) 2-0 on Friday evening in the first round of the Bagley Invitational hosted by Vermont State-Castleton.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kaia Carlson scored a power-play goal at the 15:45 mark of the first period to put the Lancers up for good. Fiona Hatton and Olivia Fehl had the assists.
  • There was no scoring in the second period or the third until just 53 seconds left in the contest.
  • With 1:34 remaining, Bears senior captain Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec/Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières) was pulled for an extra attacker.
  • Worcester State got its insurance empty-netter with just 53.2 seconds left from Madelyn Franta.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears outshot the Lancers 39-35.
  • Worcester State was 1-for-8 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-1.
  • Parent finished with 34 saves.
  • Lancers goalie Kelsey Czerniawski made 39 stops to earn the shutout.
