Third period goals push Morrisville past Potsdam, 3-2

MORRISVILLE, N.Y.—Morrisville State (8-10, 5-6 SUNYAC) scored twice in the third period to edge the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (5-10-2, 1-9-2) 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mustangs outshot the Bears 11-8 in the scoreless first period. Neither team was able to capitalize on two power plays.
  • Junior forward Rebecca Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) opened the scoring just 54 seconds in the second period with assists from junior forward Alessia Marandola (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Jr. Hornets) and sophomore forward Jalynn Castro (Dexter, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles).
  • Madison Tompkins got Morrisville even with a goal at 8:29 of the second. Avery Holland and Kennedy Kirkby had the assists.
  • Morrisville scored twice in the third period to clinch the win.
  • Kirkby scored a power-play goal 1:01 into the third period and Amelia Lomas struck 1:39 later with an even-strength tally.
  • Graduate student forward Kaylee Merrill (Wasilla, Alaska/Anchorage North Stars) got the Bears within one with 1:06 remaining. Graduate student forward Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) and freshman forward Karenhatirontha Johnson (Akwesasne, Ontario/Ottawa 67's) had the assists.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Mustangs outshot the Bears 30-26.
  • Potsdam was 0-for-5 on the power play and Morrisville was 1-for-5.
  • Bears junior goalie Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec/Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières) made 27 saves.
  • Sydney Canham stopped 24 shots to earn the victory.
  • Merrill's goal was her fourth of the season and extended her program NCAA-era record to 65. She now has 89 career-points, just four shy of second place on the all-time scoring list.

The Bears head to Plattsburgh State on Friday for a 7 p.m. contest with the sixth-ranked Cardinals.
