Bears rally late, fall at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (9-14, 5-11 SUNYAC) nearly overcame a large deficit before falling at Oswego State (16-8, 12-4) before falling 62-57 on a snowy Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A jumper from senior forward Jenna Cotter (Johnson City, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) got the Bears within 12-8 at 4:51 of the first quarter, but the Lakers finished the opening 10 minutes on a 7-0 run. They led 19-8 through one. Cotter had six points in the first.
  • A three from Oswego's Julie Tanenblatt at 7:52 of the second quarter gave the Lakers their largest lead of the game, 25-9. Potsdam finished the half on a 17-12 run and trailed 37-26 at the break. Cotter was unstoppable in the second quarter, scoring 14 of Potsdam's 18 points.
  • The Bears dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Laker 18-7 and forging a 44-44 tie after 30 minutes. Cotter added eight more to her total and junior guard DaeLynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) score four.
  • Potsdam outscored Oswego 8-2 in the first two minutes of the four quarter, opening up a 52-46 lead. However, the Lakers stormed back and a three from Macey DeOrdio gave them the lead for good with 1:24 to play. Senior Barbara Bruno (Bronx, N.Y./Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology) got Potsdam within 58-57 with 37 seconds left, but Oswego closed out the game at the free-throw line.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears outshot the Lakers 37.5 to 34.9-percent from the floor.
  • Oswego edged Potsdam 41-40 on the glass.
  • Cotter scored a career and game-high 29 points to go with 10 boards for her fourth double-double of the season.
  • Bruno just missed a double-double with eight points and 11 rebounds.
  • Alcock also scored eight points.
  • Shania Iglesias led the Lakers with 20 points and five rebounds.
