CORTLAND, N.Y.—Ninth-ranked SUNY Cortland (17-3-3, 11-3-1 SUNYAC) scored twice in the first period and twice in the third to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (5-13-3, 1-12-3) 5-0 on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ella Iwinski got the Red Dragons on the board at 9:31 of the first period. Josselyn Drayson and Grace Karakas had the assists.
- Drayson then scored a shorthanded goal with just 37 seconds left in the first.
- Katie Mahoney made it 3-0 Cortland at 2:51 of the second period. Drew Kopek and Kayla Persinger assisted on the goal.
- Mahoney struck again at 13:01 of the third period with helpers from Fanny Aneborn and Iwinski.
- McKenzie Brown closed the scoring with just 1:06 left in the contest on assists from Katie Diem and Persinger.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Cortland outshot Potsdam 42-25.
- Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play.
- Freshman goalie Maddy Ferguson (Medicine Hat, Alberta/South Alberta Hockey Academy) made a career-high 37 saves for the Bears.
- Molly Goergen stopped all 25 shots she faced for the shutout.
