Hawks surge past Bears

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (4-17, 4-10 SUNYAC) was bested by the SUNY New Paltz Hawks (15-7, 11-4 SUNYAC) 87-62 on Saturday evening.
 
WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Bears used a 13-5 run, capped by a jumper from freshman forward Mike Hancock (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley), to grab a 17-13 lead at 10:50.
  • New Paltz answered with a 23-13 surge to finish the half up 36-30.
  • Back-to-back layups from sophomore guard Mohammad Sylla (Bronx, N.Y./Darrow) got Potsdam within 36-34 a minute into the second half.
  • New Paltz again countered with a 37-13 run to grab a 73-47 lead with 6:23 to play, putting the contest out of reach.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears shot 37.7-percent and the Hawks shot 47.6 from the floor.
  • Sophomore guard Mohammed Sylla (Bronx, N.Y./Darrow) tallied 19 points and six rebounds to lead Potsdam.
  • Lucas Seyoum netted 17 points for the Hawks.
