NAPLES, FLA.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (1-1) fell to Rockford University (2-2) 12-6 in the first game before pulling away from Lesley University (0-2) for a 9-2 win in the finale on the Bears' opening day in Florida.
HOW IT HAPPENED (ROCKFORD)
- The Bears scored five times in the bottom of the second on five hits and four errors. The big blow was a two-run double coming off the bat of senior second baseman Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation).
- The Regents countered with four runs in the top of the third. Three of the runs came in on single from first baseman Judah Ortiz and two errors
- A Rockford error allowed the Bears to extend their lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the third.
- The Regents scored three times in the top of the fourth and once in the top of the fifth to grab an 8-6 lead. Ortiz had a three-run double in the fourth to put Rockford up for good.
- The Regents sealed the 12-6 win with four more runs in the top of the seventh. Ortiz had another RBI single in the inning.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (ROCKFORD)
- Junior pitcher Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) (0-1) allowed eight runs, four earned, on 12 hits and three walks over the first 6.1 innings.
- Freshman hurler Chasity Johnson (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Heuvelton) allowed four earned runs on two hits and two walks in the last 0.2 innings in her Potsdam debut.
- Bella Lima (1-1) went the distance for the Regents, allowing six runs, two earned, on nine hits and striking out four.
- Dobransky finished 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
- Bears senior third baseman Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
- Cottrill was also 2-for-3 with a run and a walk.
- Ortiz led the Regents, going 4-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED (LESLEY)
- The Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a triple from Dobransky and a single from graduate student catcher Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond).
- The Lynx scored one run in the bottom of the second with a single from second baseman Jess O'Neill.
- Potsdam added a run in the top of the third on an RBI single from senior centerfielder Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union), but Lesley answered with one in the bottom of the fourth to get within 3-2.
- The gears started turning for the Bears in the top of the six when they extended their lead with five more runs with hits from sophomore designated player Sophia Pleat (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa), junior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) and Cottrill.
- Potsdam tacked on one more in the top of the seventh in a ground out RBI from Pleat to close out the 9-2 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (LESLEY)
- Freshman pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y/Kenmore West) allowed two runs on three hits and three walks for a complete-game win in her first collegiate start.
- Emma Hodgkins allowed nine runs, five earned, on eight hits and three walks in seven innings.
- Rosick went 2-for-4 with one run and an RBI.
- Dobransky went 1-for-4 with one run and an RBI.
- Bennett went 1-for-2 with three runs and an RBI.
- Pleat finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.
- Hodgkins was 1-for-1 with two runs scored to lead the Lynx.
