Bears extinguish Blazers, blanked by Bisons

NAPLES, FLA.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (2-2) split on the second day of its Florida trip. The Bears hammered Elms College (0-6) 9-1 before being stymied by Bethany College (8-0) 4-0.
 
WHAT HAPPENED (ELMS):
  • The Bears scored three runs in the top of the first. Graduate student catcher Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) doubled to left to bring in the first two runs. Sophomore designated player Sophia Pleat (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) knocked in the third run on a ground out to short.
  • The Blazers answered on a Bears' error in the bottom of the first.
  • Potsdam broke the game open with five runs in the top of the second.
  • Senior third baseman Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) and senior centerfielder Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) each had RBI singles in the second
  • Bennett scored the final run on an error in the fourth for a final score of 9-1.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) (2-0) allowed an unearned run on four hits and struck out three.
  • Fellow freshman Chasity Johnson (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Heuvelton) struck out three in a perfect bottom of the fifth.
  • Kaelyn Zakaitis (0-2) allowed eight earned runs on eight hits in 1.2 innings for the Blazers.
  • Reece Hebert allowed an unearned run in the last 3.1 innings for Elms.
  • Bennett led the team going 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI.
  • Moscarello went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
  • At the plate, Horne was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
  • Kyla Cook (Taunton, Mass./Taunton High School) led the Blazers, going 2-for-2 with one run.
 
WHAT HAPPENED (BETHANY):
  • The Bisons were able to get two runs in the top of the first without the benefit of a hit.
  • Brooke Markland drove in the Bisons' third run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third and their fourth run with an RBI single in the fifth.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (BETHANY):
  • Senior pitcher Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits through five innings.
  • Horne then threw two scoreless, one-hit innings.
  • Josie Wise didn't allow a Potsdam hit in the first 5.1 innings and struck out four.
  • Victoria Weherberger allowed two hits in the last 1.2 innings.
  • Moscarello and Rosick each went 1-for-3
  • Morgan Huey led the Bisons, going 3-for-4 with two runs.
 
WHATS NEXT?
The Bears are back in action in Naples on Thursday against Wisconsin-Superior at 9 a.m. and the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) at 11 a.m.
