NAPLES, FLA.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (4-4) split with Elms College (1-7) and Geneva College (7-1) on the final day of its Spring Break trip to Florida. The Bears roughed up the Blazers 10-2 before being hit hard by the Golden Tornadoes 9-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED (ELMS)
- Graduate student right fielder Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) scored on an error in the bottom of the first and the Bears never trailed.
- Potsdam broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the second.
- Junior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) had an RBI single and Bennett followed with a three-run triple. Senior third baseman Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) then brought in Bennett with a sac bunt.
- Freshman first baseman Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) plated a run in the bottom of the third with a ground out, but Blazers third baseman Danajah Stokes countered in the top of the fourth with an RBI single. Elms scored another run on an error and trailed 7-2.
- Potsdam added a run on a error in the bottom of the fourth and the final two runs on a LaForest two-run single in the bottom of the fifth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (ELMS)
- Senior pitcher Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) (2-2) allowed two runs, one earned, in the five innings, while striking out four.
- Bennett paced the Bears, going 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs.
- Senior left fielder Kiara Lovejoy (Lansing, N.Y./Lansing) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and LaForest was 1-for-3 with four RBI.
- Freshman catcher Hannah Fagan (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
- Jill Dykema (0-2) started for the Blazers and allowed seven runs, five earned, on six hits.
- Reece Herbert finished the game for Elms, allowing three runs, two earned, in 1.2 innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GENEVA)
- The Golden Tornadoes scored twice in the bottom of the first and never trailed.
- The Bears scored their lone run in the top of the second as a rundown allowed senior centerfielder Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) to cross the plate.
- Geneva scored twice more in the bottom of the third and then broke the game open with four in the bottom of the fifth for a commanding 8-1 lead. Another RBI single in the bottom of the sixth walked it off for the Golden Tornadoes and made it a 9-1 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GENEVA)
- Horne (1-2) allowed four runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings.
- Cottrill allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out two in the last 2.2 innings.
- Senior second baseman Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) was 2-for-3 giving her 103 hits for her career and moving her to ninth place on the program's all-time list.
- Bennett had the other Bears hit, going 1-for-3 with a run.
- Sophia Tvaroch (1-1) went all six innings for the Geneva, allowing a run on three hits and striking out seven.
- Golden Tornadoes third baseman Kyra Wilcox was 4-for-4 with two runs scored.
- Centerfielder Molly Shelly was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI and shortstop Lexi Zanic was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

The Bears return to the North Country and will wait for the snow to melt until a doubleheader at SUNY Poly on April 2.
