POTSDAM, N.Y.—Freshman pitcher
Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) hurled a gem in game two to lift the SUNY Potsdam softball team (5-5) to a 6-0 victory over Clarkson University (6-8). The Golden Knights took the opener 9-1.
WHAT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
- The Golden Knights started the scoring in the bottom of the first with a ground out to second, allowing senior catcher Zoey Kovach to score.
- The Bears countered in the top of the second with an RBI single to center from Horne that brought in senior pitcher Lexi Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) and evened the score.
- It was all Knights in the bottom of the third. Shortstop Kayla Johnson, left fielder Elissa Uveino and pinch runner Shaelee Torres combined for three runs on two hits and a sacrifice fly in the inning to extend their lead to 4-1.
- A double by centerfielder Emma Sabourin drove in third baseman Elizabeth Greco and catcher Emily Bulone to make it 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
- Uveino and Johnson scored again in the third on a single from first baseman Devin Fitzpatrick to put the Knights up 8-1.
- Pinch runner Karyssa Parker scored the final Clarkson run in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Sabourin to close out the opener 9-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Cottrill (2-3) pitched for 4.2 innings, allowing eight hits and six earned runs for Potsdam.
- Clarkson pitcher Bella Hotchkiss threw all five innings, allowing one run on three hits.
- Horne was 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Bears.
- Sabourin was 2-for-3 with three RBI for the hosts and Fitzpatrick was 1-for-2 with three RBI. Johnson finished 2-for-2 with three runs and an RBI.
WHAT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
- There was no scoring through the first four innings of the finale.
- Senior second baseman Kiara Lovejoy (Lansing, N.Y./Lansing) knocked in the only run the Bears would need with a double to right in the top of the fifth, scoring Horne.
- Graduate student catcher Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) drove then drove in Lovejoy to make it 2-0.
- Potsdam scored four times in the top of the sixth. Lovejoy drove in graduate student designated player Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./North Collins) with an infield single. Junior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) followed with a two-run single to score Lovejoy and Horne.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Horne (3-2) threw a five-hit shutout and struck out three.
- Devin Fitzpatrick allowed just one hit over the first four innings for Clarkson.
- Lily Corrice (0-2) was hit hard in 1.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on three hits and a walk.
- Amanda Corrice gave up two runs on three hits and three walks in 1.1 innings.
- Lovejoy was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run.
- Holmes was 2-for-3 with two runs and Rosick was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
