POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (5-0) roughed up Vermont State University-Castleton (1-6) 19-3 to open a season 5-0 for the first time in program history. Graduate student midfielder
Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) led the Bears with six goals and two assists for eight points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears erupted for nine goals in the first quarter and led 9-1 after 15 minutes. LaDue scored three times, while senior defender Tessa Pierce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) added two, including a man-up marker. Graduate student midfielder Taylor Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River), junior attack Megan MacWilliams (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton), freshman attack Jayla Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) and junior attack Tatiana Hillicke (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) also scored for the Bears.
- Potsdam scored the only three goals of the second quarter and led 12-1 at the half. Thompson scored on an assist from LaDue and MacWilliams set up tallies by Hillicke and graduate student defender Kalli Hewitt (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs).
- The Bears added three goals while up a player in the third quarter. Senior midfielder Mallory Marks (Brownville, N.Y./General Brown) scored the first on helper from LaDue and LaDue had the next two for a 15-2 lead through 45 minutes.
- Potsdam closed the contest with a 4-1 advantage in the fourth quarter. LaDue scored another man-up marker. Freshman attack Ava Murphy (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon) and junior midfielder Robin Gorton (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) each scored their first goals as Bears and senior attack Annemarie Geiger (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) added a final tally with 24 seconds on the clock.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- MacWilliams (1-2) and Hillicke (2-1) each had three points.
- LaDue finished with five ground balls and three draw controls.
- Swamp recorded a contest-best seven draw controls to go with two ground balls.
- Pierce scored twice, collected four draw controls and three ground balls as well as causing two turnovers.
- Freshman goalie Kimora Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made four saves and allowed a goal in the first 28:15 to pick up the win.
- Junior goalie Jane Olszewski (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) had four saves and allowed two goals in the last 31:45.
- Senior goalie Katie Stager (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) made 11 saves for Castleton.
