Red Dragons pull away from Bears late

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (3-4, 1-0 SUNYAC) used a big fourth quarter to pull away from the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (5-1, 0-1) 18-5 on Saturday afternoon in the teams' SUNYAC opener.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears outscored the Red Dragons 3-2 in the opening quarter. Graduate student midfielder Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) got the Bears on the board with a free-position goal at 11:48. She then set up senior midfielder Tessa Pierce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) at 7:50 and freshman attack Jayla Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) at 1:11.
  • Thompson scored while the Bears were a player-up with an assist from senior midfielder Mallory Marks (Brownville, N.Y./General Brown) to tie the game at 3:25 of the second quarter. Cortland scored four times in the second and led 6-4 at the break.
  • The Red Dragons scored the only three goals of the third quarter and led 9-4 after 45 minutes.
  • Cortland erupted for nine goals in the fourth quarter. Thompson had another man-up goal with an assist from Pierce at 8:51.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Freshman goalie Kimora Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) was outstanding, finishing with a career-high 18 saves.
  • Thompson led the Bears with three goals.
  • LaDue contributed a goal and two assists along with five ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers.
  • Cortland sophomore goalie Trinity Parks (Port Crane, N.Y./Chenango Forks) made one save while picking up the win.
  • Senior attack Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale, N.Y./Highland) had a game-high five points on three goals and two assists.
  • Graduate student Toni Cashman (East Moriches, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) finished with four goals and five draw controls.
