POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Canton 5-4, 1-1 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (5-2, 0-2) 10-7 on Wednesday afternoon in the teams' first ever meeting as SUNYAC opponents.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Canton scored three times in the first 9:20 to grab a 3-0 lead. The Bears answered with three goals in a 2:39 span to forge a 3-3 tie after 15 minutes. Freshman attack Jayla Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) scored with an assist from senior midfielder Tessa Pierce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs). Graduate student Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) followed and then set up senior midfielder Mallory Marks (Brownville, N.Y./General Brown) to tie the game at 0:31.
- Potsdam scored the only three goals of the second quarter as the defense shut down the Kangaroos. Pierce scored two extra-player goals around another marker from LaDue. It was 6-3 at the break.
- Canton rallied for the only four goals in the third quarter to grab a 7-6 advantage through 45 minutes. Senior midfielder Maddy Caron (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) sparked the Roos with two of the goals.
- After another Caron goal to open the fourth quarter, Thompson ended the 5-0 run with a goal on a helper from LaDue. Strong play from Canton senior goalie Olivia Scott (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) and another Caron goal sealed the victory for the Roos.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Pierce finished with two goals and two assists to go with four ground balls and three draw controls.
- LaDue also had two goals and two assists, while Thompson contributed two markers.
- LaDue now has 162 points on 121 goals and 41 assists. She has risen to fifth place on the scoring and goals lists and 10th on the assists list.
- Caron led all scorers with five goals. She also totaled five draw controls.
- Potsdam freshman goalie Kimora Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made nine saves.
- Scott earned the win with 14 stops.
