Red Dragons rally past Bears

ONEONTA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (5-3, 0-3 SUNYAC) started quickly, but SUNY Oneonta (3-6, 2-0) rallied for an 18-13 victory on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears opened the contest on a 6-1 run and led 6-3 after one quarter of play. Junior attack Megan MacWilliams (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) and freshman attack Jayla Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) each scored twice and graduate student midfielder Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) and senior midfielder Tessa Pierce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) also scored.
  • Oneonta outscored Potsdam 4-1 in the second quarter and the contest was tied 7-7 at the half. LaDue had the Bears' seventh tally.
  • The Red Dragons continued to surge, building a 6-1 advantage in the third quarter and were ahead 13-8 through 45 minutes. MacWilliams scored a man-up marker in the third.
  • The teams evenly split the 10 goals in the fourth quarter. Thompson scored twice more and LaDue, Pierce and freshman attack Riana Baxter (Massena, N.Y./Massena) had the other three markers.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • LaDue had six points on three goals and three assists along with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. She is up to 168 points on 124 goals and 44 assists for her career. LaDue ranks fifth in program history in scoring and goals and seventh in assists.
  • Thompson finished with four goals, an assist, five points and two ground balls.
  • MacWilliams had a hat trick and Pierce had two tallies.
  • Freshman goalie Kimora Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made 15 saves.
  • Julia Hawkins gave up seven goals and stopped three shots in the first half and Margo Haring picked up the win in relief with three saves and six goals allowed in the second half.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday at SUNY New Paltz for a 4 p.m. SUNYAC contest.
