Hawks upend Bears

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.—Despite a hot start by the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (5-4, 0-3 SUNYAC), SUNY New Paltz (8-2, 3-0) rallied for a 19-7 win on Wednesday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears ran out to a 5-1 start to the contest over the first 9:02 of the opening quarter. Freshman attack Jayla Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) scored three times and junior attack Megan MacWilliams (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) and senior midfielder Tessa Pierce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) also had goals.
  • The Hawks used a big run to seize control of the contest.
  • Pierce had another goal in the second quarter and graduate student midfielder Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) added one in the fourth quarter.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Pierce led the Bears with two goals and two assists.
  • Thompson finished with three goals
  • Junior goalie Jane Olszewski (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) made 11 saves for the Bears.
  • Piper Mascaros earned the win for the Hawks with a save and a goal allowed over the second and third quarters.
  • Kaitlyn Shaw paced New Paltz with six goals.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears will celebrate Senior Day prior to their 11 a.m. contest with Buffalo State on Saturday.
