UTICA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (4-1) overpowered SUNY Poly 16-3 on Saturday afternoon on the road. Senior midfielder
Owen Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) had three points (1g, 2a) giving him 142 for his career and tying him for 10th on Potsdam's all-time scoring list.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was all the Bears in the first quarter as they outscored the Wildcats 6-0. Senior midfielder Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) and junior attackman Billy Kozloski (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) each had two goals in the first.
- Potsdam opened the second quarter with a goal from Rose at 14:40. The Bears had a 4-1 edge in the second with the rest of the goals from Kozloski, junior midfielder Tyler Gould (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and Walsh. It was 10-1 Potsdam at the half.
- The Wildcats held the Bears to two goals in the third quarter with both goals coming from Kosloski.
- The Bears scored four more goals in the fourth to close out the 16-3 victory. Senior midfielder Ryan Hughes (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post), freshman midfielder Kyan Combs (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown), junior attack Crayton Cree (Hogansburg, N.Y./Salmon River) and freshman midfielder Preston Daniels (Peru, N.Y./Peru) each scored for Potsdam.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Bears outshot the Wildcats 48-28 on the afternoon.
- Potsdam won 18 of the 23 faceoffs in the game and junior faceoff specialist Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y/Ogdensburg Free Academy) won 16 of his 19 attempts.
- Senior goalie Liam O'Neil (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) recorded 10 saves to win his 12th career game. He is now tied for eighth on the program's all-time list.
- Wildcats goalie Joseph VanZandt tallied 16 saves.
- Kozloski finished with five goals and two ground balls and Rose had three goals.
- Junior midfielder Tyler Gould (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) contributed two goals.
- Walsh had a goals and two assists. He has 85 goals and 57 helpers for 142 points in his career.
