Golden Eagles escape Bears in OT, 11-10

BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (1-1) rallied from a four-goal deficit before bowing to SUNY Brockport (2-2) 11-10 in overtime on Friday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams alternated the six goals in the first quarter with the Golden Eagles striking and the Bears responding each time. Senior attackman Cobie Cree (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) scored Potsdam's first goal on an assist from junior attack Billy Kozloski (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City). Kozloski then score the next two, the first while a man-up and the second on a feed from Cree.
  • Brockport started the second quarter on a 4-0 run before senior midfielder Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) halted the momentum with his first of the season. The Golden Eagles led 7-4 at the break.
  • After another Brockport goal, the Bears rattled off three straight to get with in 8-7 at 1:44 of the third quarter. Cree scored with an assist from senior midfielder Owen Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) at 11:30. Senior midfielder Ryan Hughes (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) struck at 5:14 off a pass from Cree. Walsh then scored to make it a one-goal contest. Brockport answered 55 seconds later and led 9-7 after 45 minutes.
  • There was no scoring until 7:09 of the fourth quarter. Junior defender Alex Farben-Griggs (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) got Potsdam within 9-8 on another feed from Cree. Rose tied the game with 4:25 left. Cree scored at 3:19 to give the Bears their first lead of the contest with an assist from junior midfielder Tyler Gould (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder). Brockport tied the game with just 25 seconds on the clock to force overtime.
  • Brockport took the only two shots of overtime and the second one found the back of the net at 2:01 to give the Golden Eagles the victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears outshot Brockport 47-30.
  • Potsdam was 1-for-8 in man-up situations and the Golden Eagles went 1-4.
  • Cree led the Bears again with six points on three goals and three assists to go with two ground balls.
  • Kozloski had two goals, an assist and three ground balls.
  • Rose had two goals and Walsh had a goal and an assist.
  • Junior goalie Saka Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) finished with six saves.
  • Jack Acker saved the contest for Brockport with 20 stops.
  • Bears junior faceoff specialist Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) had another strong day, winning 14 of his 19 attempts.
  • 11 of the teams' last 15 meetings have been decided by two goals or less with four contests reaching overtime.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears now head to Pennsylvania for two games during Spring Break. Potsdam faces Lebanon Valley College at 4 p.m. on Monday and Albright College at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
