POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Oneonta (6-7, 3-1 SUNYAC) held off the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (6-5, 2-2) in a wild finish for 17-16 victory on Saturday afternoon. Bears senior midfielder
Owen Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) scored his 100th career goal during the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Oneonta outscored the Bears 6-3 in the first quarter. Back-to-back goals from senior captain Cobie Cree (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) and sophomore midfielder Braden Fahey (Halfmoon, N.Y./Shenendehowa) gave the Bears a 2-1 lead. With 2:27 on the clock, Walsh reached the century mark.
- Potsdam reversed the first in the second quarter, with a 6-3 advantage and the contest was tied 9-9 at the break. Walsh scored three more times, including a man-up marker, and Cree, junior long-stick midfielder Ryan Wassmer (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and senior midfielder Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) had the other goals.
- The teams split the first four goals of the fourth quarter, but Oneonta pulled away with four straight extra-man tallies, including three in a 25-second span. It was 15-11 Red Dragons after 45 minutes. Senior midfielder Ryan Hughes (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) and Walsh had Potsdam's goals.
- Sophomore attackman Mick O'Donnell (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) finished a feed from Cree at 13:08 of the fourth quarter to get the Bears within three.
- After another Oneonta goal, freshman midfielder Kyan Combs (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) and Cree scored in a 50-second span to make it a 16-14 contest. Cree's marker came while a man-up.
- Oneonta scored a final time with 4:57 to go but simultaneous penalties at 1:45 gave the Bears a two-man advantage and they they made the most of it.
- Potsdam struck for two man-up goals from O'Donnell and Walsh in 17 seconds to get within 17-16. Unfortunately, Oneonta freshman goalie Mark Restivo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) robbed what could have been the game-tying goal with seconds left to preserve the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Walsh had a game-high six goals. He now has 167 points on 105 goals and 62 assists. Walsh is tied for seventh on the program's all-time scoring and goals lists and is tied for eighth in assists.
- Cree finished with three goals and two assists. He has 104 career goals along with 53 assists for 157 points, placing him ninth on Potsdam's scoring list, tied for eighth on the goals list and 12th in assists.
- O'Donnell finished with a career-high four points on two goals and two assists.
- Hughes, Combs and Rose each had a goal and an assist.
- Junior faceoff specialist Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) won 21 of his 35 chances in the circle and collected nine ground balls.
- Junior goalie Saka Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made 13 saves for the Bears.
- Junior attackman Jamie O'Neil (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) led the Red Dragons with a contest-best nine points on four goals and five assists.
- Senior attackman Matthew Krieg (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had three goals and two assists and sophomore attackman Thomas Hnis (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) scored five goals.
- Restivo finished with 14 stops for the win.
