Blue Devils sweep Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Fredonia (7-11, 5-1 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam softball team (7-12, 1-5) 11-2 and 10-6 in a Saturday doubleheader.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • Fredonia scored six runs in the top of second inning, the big blow coming on a three-run homer off the bat of senior centerfielder Megan Guidry (Newburg, N.Y./Valley Central).
  • The Blue Devils tacked on five more runs on four hits in the top of the sixth.
  • Senior left fielder Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) got the Bears on the board with an RBI single that scored graduate student second baseman Hope Sandor (North Salem, N.Y./North Salem). Moscarello then scored on a wild pitch.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1)
  • Senior pitcher Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) (4-6) allowed five earned runs on four hits in three innings. Freshman Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) gave up one earned run on seven hits in the last three innings.
  • Fredonia sophomore pitcher Kendall Phillips (Bergen, N.Y./Byron-Bergen) (4-3) allowed two unearned runs on three hits, while striking out eight for the win.
  • Freshman first baseman Kirsten Lajewski (Seneca Falls, N.Y./Mynderse Academy) was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Guidry finished 1-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • The Blue Devils scored in the top of the first, but the Bears tied the score on an RBI single from Cottrill in the bottom of the inning.
  • Fredonia struck twice in the top of the second and top of the third for a 5-1 lead.
  • Potsdam countered with three in the bottom of the third to close within one run. Cottrill had an RBI double. Senior third baseman Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) and senior shortstop Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science & Innovation) then followed with two RBI singles.
  • Fredonia added two more in the top of the fifth and one in the top of the sixth to make it 8-4. The Bears got two back in the bottom of the sixth on an error and a ground out.
  • The Blue Devils added two final runs in the top of the seventh on a triple and a single to close out the 10-6 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
  • Horne (3-6) allowed five earned runs on 11 hits and struck out three in six innings. Cottrill allowed three runs on three hits and a strike out in the seventh.
  • Junior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) was 3-for-3 with two runs.
  • Cottrill was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
  • LaForest was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
  • Fredonia graduate student pitcher Vanessa Galbraith (Geneseo, N.Y./Livonia) allowed three runs on five hits in two innings.
  • Freshman pitcher Sabrina Edwards-Smith (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (2-2) allowed a run on three hits in three innings to pick up the win.
  • Phillips struck out two in two innings and allowed just one hit to earn the save.
  • Sophomore second baseman Madison Devore (Caledonia, N.Y./Caledonia Munford) was 4-for-5 with a run and two RBI.
  • Junior catcher Avery Hill (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they head to St. Lawrence University for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
