Saints edge Bears in doubleheader

CANTON, N.Y.—St. Lawrence University (14-10) defeated the SUNY Potsdam softball team (7-14) 4-3 and 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon in the wind and rain.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • The Bears scored first in the top of the first as senior centerfielder Kiara Lovejoy (Lansing, N.Y./Lansing) stole home. Senior second baseman Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) followed suit after a single from senior pitcher Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles).
  • SLU answered with two RBI singles in the bottom of the first to tie the game.
  • The Saints added a run on an error in the bottom of the fifth and another in the bottom of the sixth for a 4-2 lead.
  • Junior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) got the Bears within 4-3 in the top of the seventh on a single that brought in Lovejoy.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1)
  • Cottrill (4-7) went the distance for Potsdam, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits. She was 2-for-2 at the plate.
  • Lovejoy was 3-for-4 with two runs.
  • Dobransky was 2-for-4 with a run. She now has 114 career hits, tying her for fifth with Katie Marsman '16 on the program's all-time list.
  • Izzy Melanson (5-2) picked up the win for SLU after allowing two earned runs on 10 hits and striking out four.
  • Designated player Maeve Thompson led the Saints at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • In the finale, the Saints opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from left fielder Marina Juan.
  • The Bears tied the game in the top of the fifth as graduate student catcher Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) drove in senior third baseman Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) with a triple to left center.
  • SLU took the lead for good with an RBI triple off the bat of right fielder Stella VanGee in the bottom of the fifth.
  • The Saints added insurance with a three-run double from third baseman Allison Kloft to make it 5-1.
  • Bennett drove in LaForest again with a single in the top of the seventh to close the scoring.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
  • Freshman pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) (3-7) allowed four earned runs on eight hits for the Bears.
  • Bennett was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
  • LaForest was 1-for-2 with two runs.
  • Marleigh Monroe (3-6) earned the win for the Saints after allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out six.
  • Kloft was 2-for-3 with a run and three RBI.
  • VanGee was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears' doubleheader at SUNY New Paltz has been moved from Saturday to this Thursday, 4/17 due to expected poor weather. The games start at 3 p.m.
